The Grand Rapids community reflects on the profound loss of Christa Leigh Veldkamp, a 33 year old speech language pathologist who passed away on November 14, 2025, following a brief struggle with mental health challenges.
Born on April 5, 1992, to Rick and Heather Veldkamp, she embodied faith and compassion in her daily life. Her family finds solace in the belief that she now rests with her Lord and Savior.
Christa shared deep bonds with her sister Kelly and brother in law Marc Schra, brother Eric Veldkamp, and served as a devoted aunt to nephews Rowan, Ezra, and Cole Schra. She cherished her connections within the extended Mennega, Veldkamp, and Gun Lake families. Preceded in death by her grandmother Joan Mennega, grandparents Harry and Vivian Veldkamp, and cousin Amy DeKock, she left a legacy of familial warmth.
Christa pursued her passion for helping others at Calvin University, earning a degree in speech language pathology that prepared her for a fulfilling career. Her academic journey emphasized communication development in young children. This foundation reflected her innate empathy and commitment to education from an early age.
Professionally, Christa dedicated her expertise to pediatric therapy at The Center for Physical Rehabilitation in Caledonia, Michigan, where she supported children with communication needs. Over several years, she developed innovative programs, including summer bridge initiatives for ongoing progress. Colleagues admired her patient guidance and joyful approach to sessions.
In her personal life, Christa embraced an adventurous spirit through water skiing on Gun Lake, snow skiing trips, hiking trails, golf outings, mountain biking, and rock climbing excursions. She found joy in reading inspirational books, playing with her nephews, and nurturing time with family and friends. Her openness to new experiences highlighted a vibrant, caring lifestyle.
A visitation occurs on November 19 at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home in Kentwood, followed by a Celebration of Life on November 20 at Hillside Community Church in Grand Rapids. Memorial contributions support Winning at Home, and her family urges seeking mental health resources with hope in faith. Christas influence endures through the lives she touched with kindness and resilience.
