Dale Leon Sawtelle, a beloved member of Red Oak and Montgomery County passed away on December 1, 2025, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. At 61, Dale left us far too soon, but the love, laughter, and skillful hands that could fix anything will live on in every engine he tuned and every hug he gave.
Dale grew up in the heart of southwest Iowa, where he learned early that a wrench and a willing heart could solve most problems. He became one of the area’s most trusted mechanics, known for his ability to diagnose a strange noise in minutes and always treating customers like neighbors. Whether it was a farmer’s tractor or a friend’s pickup, Dale got it running again with patience, pride, and a story or two.
When he wasn’t under the hood, Dale was out enjoying the simple things he loved: casting a line at Lake Icaria, chasing a little white ball around the Red Oak Country Club course, or rolling strikes at the bowling alley with his crew. He had a laugh that carried across the water and a way of making every outing feel like the best day of the year.
Family was Dale’s whole world. He leaves behind his wife Heidi Jarrett-Sawtelle, his children and stepchildren who called him Dad with pride, his grandchildren who adored their “Papa Dale,” and a large circle of siblings, in-laws, and friends who became family. His home was always open, his smoker always ready, and his love always unconditional.
Red Oak has lost one of its own. Dale Leon Sawtelle lived with grease on his hands, love in his heart, and a smile that made the world a little brighter. The shop feels quieter, the lake a little emptier, and every golf cart ride a little slower without him.
A celebration of Dale’s life will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak. Everyone who knew and loved Dale is welcome to come share stories, swap memories, and honor a man who made southwest Iowa feel like home.
Rest easy, Dale. The fish are biting, the fairways are wide open, and we’ll keep the lanes warm for you.
