On December 2, 2025, the Central Virginia music community was devastated by the sudden passing of Russ Pawlas, the newly appointed director of Brookville Middle School Bands in Lynchburg. He was 42 years old. In just a few short months, Russ had already begun transforming the program with his infectious energy, deep musical knowledge, and heartfelt care for every student.
A Roanoke native, Russ was a graduate of James Madison University and earned a master’s degree in conducting from Virginia Commonwealth University. Over an 18-year career, he taught band programs in Bedford and Campbell Counties, most recently leading the Jefferson Forest High School bands to consistent superior ratings and statewide recognition.
Russ was known for turning rehearsals into joyful, memorable experiences and for building community on every bus ride to competitions—often filled with playlists, laughter, and his signature dad jokes. Colleagues and former students remember him as a mentor who made everyone feel welcome, whether they were a first-year teacher or a middle schooler learning their first scale.
At home in Forest, Russ shared a musical life with his wife of 15 years, Sarah, also a music educator, and their two young sons. Weekends often found the family at local football games, where Russ would gladly lend a hand in the stands or the pit, always eager to support young musicians.
Beyond the classroom, he served on the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association events committee and was a steady source of encouragement for educators and students alike.
A celebration of Russ’s life will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, featuring performances by combined ensembles from Brookville and Jefferson Forest.
