The Philomath, Oregon, community has lost one of its own with the passing of Steven “Steve” Graves at the age of 62. After an eight-month battle with pancreatic cancer, Steve died peacefully at home surrounded by his family. A lifelong resident of the Philomath community, Steve was known for his quiet strength, dependable nature, and subtle wit—qualities that defined him.
Steve graduated from Philomath High School in 1981 and spent more than four decades working in the timber industry, most recently as a faller and heavy-equipment operator for Hull-Oakes Lumber Company. Respected for his precision and skill, he was also a valued mentor to younger loggers, always willing to share his knowledge of safe and responsible timber work.
Married to his high school sweetheart, Karen, for 41 years, Steve built a loving home and raised three children there. He was a devoted father who coached youth baseball, rarely missed a school game, and remained a steady presence in his children’s lives—even cheering from the bleachers during his toughest weeks of treatment.
In his free time, Steve enjoyed fly-fishing on the Alsea River, reloading ammunition, and tending a vegetable garden famous for its tomatoes. He was a generous neighbor, often sharing his smoked brisket, homegrown produce, and firewood with those around him. Even during his illness, he continued delivering venison to the local food bank and splitting wood for elderly friends, always putting others first.
Steve is survived by his wife, Karen; their three children; seven grandchildren; and a Philomath community deeply touched by his work ethic, faith, and humble generosity. Though he will be greatly missed, his family takes comfort in knowing his pain has ended and his legacy of strength, kindness, and quiet service will endure in the town he loved.
