Nathan “Nate” D. Derr Sr., a 47-year-old resident of North Chili, New York, and very tragically on November 10, 2025, after being hit by an Amtrak passenger train close to Lyons.
According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Derr was walking south on Franklin Street along non-pedestrian train tracks at around 4:45 p.m. when the crash happened. The event is still being investigated, and no passengers were hurt.
As a loving father, Nate loved spending time with his son, daughter, and small grandson. He frequently shared advice and anecdotes that deepened their relationships. He valued family get-togethers that were full of support and humor since he was survived by his children, siblings, and extended relatives.
Nate was raised in rural areas of upstate New York and attended Lyons Central High School, where he focused on practical crafts until graduating in 1996. Later, in 1998, he graduated from Finger Lakes Community College with an associate’s degree in mechanical engineering.
For 25 years, Nate worked as a proficient machinist with a focus on precise tooling and equipment maintenance at a local manufacturing facility. His proficiency in troubleshooting intricate technology was highly appreciated by colleagues, who used it to improve production processes.
Nate’s passion for the outdoors was evident in his way of life, which included fixing old motorcycles in his workshop and going fishing on nearby rivers on the weekends. He loved teaching young baseball players in the area how to function as a team. His routine was tempered by these interests, which showed that he was a guy who enjoyed small-scale adventures and relationships to the community.
A memorial ceremony is planned for November 18 at North Chili Presbyterian Church. Nate’s legacy of compassion lives on through his family’s perseverance and the persons he impacted. Contributions to the American Red Cross pay tribute to his giving nature. The community promises to honor him as a symbol of unwavering strength and family love.
