The longtime Churubusco resident passed away peacefully at the age of 72 after an extended illness, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and creativity. He departed on December 29, 2025, at 11:05 p.m., surrounded by family in his daughter’s home.
Born on October 12, 1953, in Toledo, Ohio, to parents Mildred and Richard McDaniel, Donald grew up known affectionately as Donnie among those closest to him. He earned the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout, reflecting his early commitment to service and achievement. After graduating from Elmhurst High School in 1971, he pursued further learning through classes at IPFW over many years, showing a lifelong curiosity.
In 1976, Don married Marlene, his partner for 48 joyful years filled with shared adventures and simple pleasures. Together they explored the country through travel and camping trips, often enjoying live music from favorites like John Denver and Jimmy Buffett. The couple raised two children, Amanda and Corey, building a family grounded in love, laughter, and enduring memories.
Professionally, Don devoted more than 35 years to Parkview Hospital, working diligently in the print shop until his retirement in 2016. A passionate lifelong artist, he poured his talent into woodcarving and woodworking, crafting pieces that brought beauty to everyday life. Even in retirement, he embraced new pursuits like watercolor painting, always open to fresh ways of expressing his creative spirit.
Don was preceded in death by his son Corey in 2014, his wife Marlene earlier in 2025, his father Richard in 2001, and his mother Mildred in 2022. He is survived by his daughter Amanda and her husband Nathaniel Brundige, along with grandchildren Maya and Liliana Brake, and Violet and Raven Brundige, all of Fort Wayne. His brother Mac McDaniel of Monroeville and many extended family members also cherish his memory.
Funeral services will take place on January 10, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity English Lutheran Church, located at 450 West Washington Boulevard in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with visitation beginning two hours earlier. The community comes together to honor a man whose quiet resilience and generous heart touched countless lives. Donald R. McDaniel lived fully, leaving behind a legacy of connection, artistry, and unwavering affection that will endure for generations.
