The community of Peoria is mourning the tragic loss of Donald E. “Swanny” Swanson, who passed away at 10:37 p.m. on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at Richard L. Owens Hospice Home. At 84 years old, Don’s passing marks the end of a life filled with dedication to family, faith, and professional service.
Born on January 30, 1941, to Nels and Marie (Johnson) Swanson, Don grew up in Galesburg, where he attended the Covenant Church. His faith remained central throughout his life, and after moving to Peoria, he became a member of Salem Lutheran Church, where he served faithfully for more than fifty years. His roles as steward and later memorial secretary reflected his commitment to his congregation and his desire to give back to the community.
Don married Rosemary Coates and together, they built a family that became his greatest source of pride. He is also survived by his four children and ten grandchildren: David and Kelly Swanson (Collin, Annie, and Drew); Michael and Jennifer Swanson (Kylie and Alex); Marci and Brian Linne (Emily (Carson) Potts, Luke, and Sara); Adam and Mandy Coates (Ora and Adel). In addition, he leaves behind his sister Martha Rittenhouse, along with three nieces and one nephew. His parents preceded him in death.
He embarked on a distinguished 32-year career as a federal bank examiner after his service in the Illinois Air National Guard. Colleagues and friends admired his sharp memory, particularly his remarkable ability to recall dates both significant and obscure—a talent that impressed everyone around him. His professional life was marked by integrity, precision, and a commitment to excellence.
Visitation for Don will be held from 2–5 p.m. on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at Salem Lutheran Church. Additional visitation will take place one hour prior to his memorial service, scheduled for 11 a.m. on Monday, January 5, 2026, at the same church, with Pastor Craig Swenson officiating. Private burial of ashes will follow at Resurrection Cemetery at a later date.
As Peoria reflects on his passing, Don will be remembered not only for his professional achievements and church service but also for his warmth, devotion to family, and the countless ways he touched the lives of those around him. His legacy endures in the love he gave, the faith he lived, and the memories cherished by all who knew him.
