It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Howard J. Emerson, age 87, on January 2, 2026, at Springfield Memorial Hospital. His passing marks the end of a long and meaningful life, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, faith, and love for his family.
Born on December 30, 1938, to Otto and Hazel (Kidd) Emerson, Howard grew up with strong values that shaped his character. In 1957, he married Frances Taylor in Rockford, beginning a marriage that spanned nearly seven decades. Together, they built a family that became the center of his world.
Howard worked with Allis-Chalmers/Fiat-Allis, where he had a reputation as a hard worker and a “Jack of all trades.” His friends and coworkers respected his talent and tenacity, and his love of automobiles continued to be a defining aspect of his life. In addition to his career, Howard was a devoted follower of Pasfield Baptist Church, where his religion served as a compass and a link to his neighborhood.
He was preceded in death by his son, Michael H. Emerson, Sr.; daughter, Jody Emerson-Grimmett; and granddaughters, Jackie Hannon and Deirdre Ferry. Despite these losses, Howard remained a source of strength for his family, embodying resilience and love throughout his life.
Howard is survived by his wife, Frances; daughter, Sandy Elliott (Donald Poludniak); son, Michael Eugene Emerson; grandchildren, Sarah Deen, Michael Emerson, Amanda Emerson, and Shane Elliott; six great-grandchildren; sister, Elizabeth Chelinsky; brother, C. Albert Emerson; and several nieces and nephews. His family now mourns the loss of a man whose presence was a steady anchor in their lives.
On Friday, January 9, 2026, from 10 to 11 a.m., a memorial gathering will take place at Vancil-Murphy Funeral Home. Pastor John Swinford will then conduct a memorial ceremony. Later on, there will be a private burial. Howard J. Emerson will be remembered for his love for his community and faith, his artistry, and his dedication to family when his loved ones come together to celebrate his life.
