On December 14, 2025, Nancy Stoutz Hultquist, then 88 years old, passed away quietly in Oberlin, Ohio, surrounded by the affection of family and friends throughout her final days, which were filled with phone calls, visits, and shared life celebrations.
Her passing came soon after that of her beloved husband of nearly 64 years, Donald E. Hultquist, who died on November 5, 2025, marking the end of an extraordinary partnership that touched countless lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Oberlin.
Nancy earned a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from Washington University. She later served as church secretary at Memorial Christian Church in Ann Arbor for nearly 20 years, a role that reflected her deep commitment to community and faith while laying the foundation for her lifelong dedication to service.
In 1960, during clinical training at the University of Rochester, Nancy met Donald E. Hultquist. They married in 1961, embarking on a shared journey defined by kindness, intellect, and boundless energy. Together, they enriched the communities around them, first in Ann Arbor as active members of Memorial Christian Church, and for the past 23 years as residents of Kendal at Oberlin, where they immersed themselves in nearly every aspect of community life and formed many cherished friendships.
Nancy balanced her vibrant personal interests with the demands of raising a busy family of five children. She swam a mile a day well into her 80s, consistently logged 10,000 steps daily, and delighted in cooking, crafts, and traveling the world to trace her family roots through extensive genealogical research. Known for her handmade fuzzy “grandma socks,” she managed a lively household while providing unwavering support for her children’s education and needs.
A lifelong volunteer and accomplished leader, Nancy poured her passion into causes large and small at national and local levels. She contributed significantly to Ann Arbor Public Schools, Memorial Christian Church, Community Peace Builders, and Crop Walk. At Kendal at Oberlin, she served as founding editor of the Eureka and Health & Wellness publications, chaired committees on nutrition, sports, woodworking, library, and genealogy, and held two terms as president of the Kendal at Oberlin Residents Association, guiding initiatives that strengthened her community.
Friends and family are invited to a joint Celebration of Life honoring Nancy and Donald at Matthaei Botanical Gardens, 1800 N Dixboro Rd, Ann Arbor, MI, on Saturday, February 7, 2026, with visitation beginning at 1:00 PM and the service at 2:00 PM.
