A steadfast Army veteran who served with distinction during the Vietnam era, Bryson exemplified courage both on the battlefield and in his final days. His departure leaves an enduring imprint of devotion and quiet heroism among those who knew him.
Born Luther Thomas Bryson on March 15, 1942, in nearby Richmond to L.T. Bryson Sr. and Mary Ellen Hayes Bryson, he grew up amid the vibrant industrial landscape of Contra Costa County. From an early age, he displayed a strong work ethic, helping on family projects while fostering a love for mechanical tinkering. These formative years instilled values of perseverance that guided his lifelong journey.
Bryson graduated from Richmond High School in 1960, where he excelled in shop classes and played on the varsity football team as a defensive lineman. He pursued vocational training at Contra Costa College, earning a certificate in automotive repair that launched his professional path. His education blended practical skills with a commitment to self improvement, traits he passed on to his children.
Enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1962, Bryson served as a mechanic in the 1st Cavalry Division, deploying to Vietnam from 1965 to 1967 and earning the Bronze Star for meritorious service under fire. Returning home, he channeled his expertise into a 35 year career at the Chevron Richmond Refinery, rising to senior maintenance supervisor. Colleagues admired his precision and mentorship in the demanding world of industrial operations.
In his personal life, Bryson was a devoted husband to Joan Marie Bryson for 58 years, marrying her in 1967 shortly after his honorable discharge. Together they raised three children: sons David and Michael, and daughter Lisa, all of whom credit his steady guidance for their successes. Family gatherings centered on backyard barbecues and storytelling sessions that celebrated shared history.
Bryson’s hobbies reflected his hands on nature, including restoring classic cars in his garage workshop and fishing along the San Pablo Bay with longtime companions. An avid reader of military history, he volunteered with the local VFW chapter, organizing veteran support events. His gentle humor and unwavering loyalty made him a beloved figure in neighborhood circles.
Bryson is survived by his wife Joan, children David (spouse Karen), Michael (spouse Sarah), and Lisa (spouse Robert), along with seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on November 20 at San Pablo Veterans Memorial Hall, with donations suggested to the American Cancer Society. His memory inspires continued advocacy for veterans and cancer research in the Bay Area.
