A former New Jersey state assemblyman died early Sunday morning after a two-car crash on McCarter Highway in Newark. Albert “Alberto” Coutinho, 56, was involved in the collision around 7:29 a.m. near the intersection of McCarter Highway and South Street, a stretch known for heavy commuter traffic and high speeds.
Emergency responders arrived to find both drivers injured. During treatment at the scene, Coutinho went into cardiac arrest. Paramedics worked to revive him as he was rushed to University Hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
