In the busy intersection of MLK Boulevard and Whitehall Road in Anderson, 67-year-old retired South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Charles “Chuck” Coggins lost his life in a major multi-vehicle crash on November 21, 2025.
Anderson Police and emergency crews responded to the scene, where two other individuals sustained critical injuries. The collision has left the upstate community reeling from the loss of a dedicated public servant.
Chuck served 32 years with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, retiring in 2018 as a Master Trooper assigned to Anderson County. He earned numerous commendations for traffic enforcement and accident investigation excellence. Colleagues remembered him as a mentor who trained dozens of new troopers with patience and professionalism.
Chuck shared a home in the Whitehall area with his wife of 44 years and stayed deeply connected to their three adult children and seven grandchildren through regular family gatherings. He coached youth baseball in Anderson for over a decade after retirement. These family bonds formed the joyful center of his post-service life.
Chuck maintained an active retirement routine with early morning walks along the Civic Center trails and volunteer shifts at the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office Citizens Academy. He followed Clemson Tigers football faithfully and attended every home game with season tickets. Simple hobbies like woodworking in his garage produced handmade toys for grandchildren.
Anderson Police continue investigating the crash circumstances, including possible speed or impairment factors in the intersection known for heavy traffic. Two other victims remain hospitalized in critical condition at AnMed Health Medical Center. No charges have been announced pending full reconstruction.
Anderson honors Chuck with a growing memorial at the crash site and lowered flags at Highway Patrol Post C. His family prepares services at a local Methodist church, while former troopers establish a scholarship fund for law enforcement hopefuls in his name.
