A Katy-area couple in their fifties was shot to death in their own home early Monday morning, January 12, 2026, while their children slept upstairs. At about 5:20 a.m., one of the couple’s adult sons called 911 to report that his mother and father had been shot and were “beyond help”.
The victims were later officially identified by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office as 52-year-old Trinette Lopez (also identified as Trinette Rayson-Lopez) and her husband, Christopher Lopez.
Deputies and EMS who responded to the two-story home on Bent Springs Lane attempted life-saving measures, but the couple was pronounced dead at the scene. Christopher Lopez was found near the main living area of the house with a gunshot wound to the face. Trinette Lopez was discovered nearby, in the kitchen area, having been shot twice in the head and once in the left hand.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office confirmed this was a double homicide. Based on the nature of the crime, investigators have stated they believe the shooting was a targeted attack, not a random act. The couple’s two adult children and a 7-year-old relative, who family members clarified was an adopted cousin, were asleep upstairs at the time of the shooting. They were awakened by the sound of gunshots, ran downstairs, and discovered their parents deceased.
A critical detail from the investigation is that there were no immediate signs of forced entry into the home. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez also noted there had been previous calls for service to the residence involving an ex-partner, though that individual has not been publicly named as a suspect. Authorities have not recovered a weapon from the scene, and as of Wednesday, January 14, no arrests had been made and no suspect had been publicly identified.
The adult children of the victims have spoken publicly, describing their parents as high school sweethearts and “great parents” who were known for their caring nature, often taking in family members. They expressed they do not feel comfortable returning to the family home until an arrest is made. The 7-year-old child who was in the home has been placed in a safe environment by Child Protective Services. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit continues to investigate and asks anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers.
