Dr. Gyan S. Brard, a Mesa endocrinologist who treated patients with diabetes, thyroid troubles, and other hormonal ailments for almost thirty years, passed away following a year-long struggle with health problems. He was sixty-six.
Brard joined Valley Endocrine Associates in September 1997 and remained with the practice for over 27 years. He saw patients at offices in Mesa, Tempe, and Gilbert, with his primary location on South 63rd Street in Mesa. He was board-certified in both endocrinology and internal medicine.
A graduate of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis (1990), Brard completed his postgraduate training at the University of California San Diego Medical Center. He held affiliations with Banner Desert Medical Center, Banner Baywood Medical Center, and Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center.
Throughout his career, Brard developed a special interest in insulin pump therapy, often downloading patient data during routine follow-ups to help them achieve better daily blood sugar control. He treated a wide range of endocrine conditions, including hypothyroidism, Type 2 diabetes, maturity-onset diabetes of the young, and pediatric obesity. Among his patients, over half had diabetes, and nearly three-quarters had high blood pressure.
Colleagues at Valley Endocrine Associates described him as a physician who made a point of connecting with each patient on a personal level, even as the demands of modern healthcare made that increasingly difficult. “I try to find some way to connect with each patient on a personal level,” he once said.
Patient reviews were mixed throughout his career. Some praised his knowledge and longevity of care, with one patient writing after 26 years of treatment: “He is so knowledgeable and continues to keep up on learning new medical information. A marvelous man who I believe is ‘called’ to be a physician.” Others, however, cited long wait times and communication issues.
Brard accepted Medicare and a wide range of insurance plans, including Aetna, Cigna, Humana, and UnitedHealthcare. He spoke Spanish and English.
His passing leaves a noticeable gap at Valley Endocrine Associates, where he was one of the practice’s senior physicians. He is survived by family members; no additional details about survivors have been publicly released.
