A beloved resident of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Dr. Patrick Kolima Pieh, has sadly passed away on January 3, 2026. At the age of 81, he departed peacefully, leaving behind a profound legacy shaped by his remarkable journey from Sierra Leone to the United States.
He was born in Taiama, Sierra Leone, on January 1, 1945, to Rev. Peter P. Pieh and Nancy N. Pieh. Patrick was a direct descendant of Sengbeh Pieh, known as Cinqué, the courageous leader of the Amistad rebellion in 1839, a pivotal event in the fight against slavery that continues to inspire generations.
Patrick spent much of his youth in Taiama before pursuing higher education in the United States, earning a Bachelor of Arts in History from Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa. He furthered his academic pursuits at Michigan State University, obtaining a Master of Arts in History and later a Doctor of Education in Curriculum Development and Instruction.
Throughout his professional life, Patrick devoted himself to higher education, teaching and serving in administrative roles at several prestigious institutions. He contributed his expertise at Metropolitan State University, Eastern Michigan University, the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor, and Wayne County Community College, where his work in curriculum development and instruction impacted countless students and colleagues.
Patrick’s heritage as a descendant of Cinqué added a layer of historical significance to his personal story, connecting him to a legacy of resilience and leadership in the face of adversity. This ancestral tie likely influenced his worldview, instilling a sense of purpose and advocacy for justice that permeated his educational endeavors.
Though his career and heritage defined much of his public impact, Patrick approached life with a quiet humility that endeared him to those around him. His lifestyle balanced professional dedication with personal reflection, finding fulfillment in the pursuit of knowledge and the mentorship of others. In the serene yet intellectually stimulating atmosphere of Ann Arbor, he contributed to the community’s cultural depth through his thoughtful engagement and enduring commitment to education.
Dr. Patrick Kolima Pieh’s life stands as a heartfelt tribute to one well lived, marked by intellectual achievement, cultural pride, and a steadfast dedication to learning that transcended borders. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Grace Community United Methodist Church, 15888 Archdale Street, Detroit, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. His memory will continue to inspire those touched by his scholarly passion and historical legacy in Ann Arbor and beyond.
