On December 4, 2025, Newfoundland and Labrador lost a respected business leader and community pillar with the passing of Frank Howard, founder and president of Capital Auto Group. He was 68 years old. After a courageous battle with cancer, Frank died surrounded by family, leaving behind a legacy of entrepreneurship, integrity, and profound community impact.
Frank’s journey began modestly over five decades ago with a single dealership. Through vision, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to quality, he grew Capital Auto Group into a major provincial employer with over 500 staff across 13 automotive brands. His business influence extended into commercial real estate through The Howard Group, helping shape the economic landscape of St. John’s and the surrounding region.
A graduate of the University of New Brunswick’s commerce program, Frank earned national recognition for his leadership, receiving the CADA Laureate Award for Ambassadorship and a recent induction into the Junior Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador Business Hall of Fame. He served on key dealer councils for leading manufacturers, always advocating for excellence and ethical business practices.
Beyond the boardroom, Frank believed deeply in giving back. He supported numerous local charities and community initiatives, reflecting his gratitude for the province that supported his success. His philanthropic spirit was woven into both his corporate philosophy and his personal life.
Family was Frank’s greatest source of pride and joy. He shared 45 years of marriage with his wife, Annette, and was a devoted father to his sons Jon, Jordan, Mike, and Nick, and a loving grandfather to Logan, Madden, Molly, and Roman. He cherished time spent with loved ones, whether around the dinner table or exploring Newfoundland’s rugged coastline.
In lieu of a traditional funeral, the family will announce a celebration of Frank’s life in the coming days—an opportunity for the community to come together in remembrance of a man whose vision, generosity, and steadfast leadership touched countless lives across the province.
