Joanne Dolores (McGann) Greenwald, a devoted nurse and faithful parishioner who spent much of her life in Peoria before relocating to Batavia, Illinois, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2025, at the age of 94.
Born on April 8, 1931, in Peoria to Michael and Magdalene (Werner) McGann, she grew up rooted in the central Illinois community, shaping a life of compassionate service and deep family ties. The Peoria and Batavia areas mourn the loss of a woman whose dedication to healthcare and faith left enduring impressions across generations.
Joanne graduated from Academy of Our Lady High School in 1949 and pursued nursing at St. Francis Nursing School in Peoria, earning her RN credentials with commitment that defined her professional path. She served as head nurse in the isolation unit, providing critical care to polio patients dependent on iron lungs during a challenging era of medical history. This role demanded resilience and empathy, qualities that earned her respect among colleagues and patients at OSF St. Francis Medical Center.
Beyond her nursing career, Joanne extended her service through volunteer work in the hospital’s gift shop and active involvement at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Peoria, where she contributed to parish life and supported initiatives aligned with her values. She was a longtime member of the Catholic Women’s League, fostering connections among women dedicated to spiritual and communal growth. After moving to Batavia, she embraced her new home by becoming a devoted parishioner at St. Peter Catholic Church in Geneva, continuing her lifelong commitment to faith.
At the heart of Joanne’s world was her profound devotion to family, cherishing her role as mother to daughter Kathleen (Greenwald) Beckmen, mother-in-law to Keith Beckmen, and grandmother to Mary Kate Beckmen, all residing in Geneva, Illinois. She nurtured these bonds with unwavering affection, offering guidance and support that strengthened familial unity across distances. Additionally, she maintained close ties with numerous nieces and nephews, extending her caring presence to extended relatives.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on December 20, 2025, at 11 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Peoria, preceded by visitation from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the same location. Interment will follow at Resurrection Mausoleum and Cemetery in Peoria, allowing family and friends to gather in remembrance of her impactful journey. These arrangements honor her deep Catholic roots and provide space for communal tribute.
