Born on June 18, 1955, in nearby Laredo to parents José and Elena Ramirez, María grew up in a vibrant Mexican American household steeped in traditions of faith and familial devotion. The eldest of five siblings, she learned early the values of selflessness and hard work, often assisting with household duties while nurturing her younger brothers and sisters.
María graduated from Martin High School in Laredo in 1973, where she excelled in home economics and served as class treasurer, demonstrating her organizational talents. She later earned an associate degree in nursing from Laredo Community College in 1977, blending her passion for caregiving with practical skills that defined her path.
Professionally, María dedicated over 30 years to healthcare as a registered nurse at University Hospital in San Antonio, specializing in oncology care after relocating to Golfcrest in 1980. Colleagues revered her for her calm demeanor during crises and her ability to comfort patients facing dire diagnoses.
In her personal life, María reveled in simple joys, including tending a lush backyard garden of herbs and roses that symbolized her nurturing essence, and hosting lively family posadas during the holiday season. An avid reader of inspirational literature, she volunteered at her local church library, sharing stories that encouraged spiritual growth. Her unwavering devotion to her children Gerardo, Rocío, and the late Francisco formed the heart of her world, marked by daily rituals of shared meals and heartfelt conversations.
María is survived by her devoted husband of 48 years, Carlos Padilla, children Gerardo and Rocío, five grandchildren, and numerous siblings and extended relatives. A rosary and memorial Mass will be held on November 18 at St. Timothy Catholic Church in San Antonio, with donations encouraged to the American Cancer Society in her honor.
