A beloved presence in the hearts of many, Martin J. “Mike” Lonergan, age 90, of South Jacksonville, Illinois, passed away early Tuesday morning, December 30, 2025, at Jacksonville Memorial Hospital. His death marks the end of a long and meaningful life, leaving behind family, friends, and neighbors who cherished his kindness, humor, and dedication.
Mike was born in Morgan County, Illinois, on December 28, 1935, to the late Martin Joseph and Marguerite Steinmetz Lonergan. On January 23, 1963, he wed Mary Ellen Cook, with whom he had more than 60 years of love and friendship. Along with a large number of nieces, nephews, and other relatives who will go on remembering him, Mary Ellen lives.
Professionally, Mike worked as a manager for Wholesome Bread Co. in Jacksonville for many years before retiring. His colleagues remembered him as hardworking and dependable, a man who believed in doing things the right way. He was also an Army veteran, serving during the Korean era in Germany, where he demonstrated discipline and commitment to his country.
Outside of work and service, Mike enjoyed simple pleasures that reflected his love of community and family. He was a familiar face at Bahans Tavern, where he spent time visiting with friends. He also loved horseracing and fishing, hobbies that brought him joy and relaxation. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family, finding happiness in the bonds that defined his life.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Carolyn Jean DeFrates and Patricia Megginson and her husband Jack. Despite these losses, he remained a source of strength and joy for his loved ones, embodying resilience and devotion throughout his life.
On Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at 11 a.m., funeral services will take place in Jacksonville, Illinois’ Williamson Funeral Home. The funeral will take place in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, which is close to Jacksonville, with military honors. On Monday, January 5, 2026, from 4 to 7 p.m., there will be viewing at the funeral home.
There will also be an extra visiting hour before the service. Martin J. “Mike” Lonergan will be remembered for his commitment to family, his service to his nation, and the joy he found in life’s small moments as loved ones assemble to pay their respects.
