The Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL) and the broader New York soccer community are heartbroken over the sudden passing of Paul Kontonis on November 25, 2025.
As League President since 2014 and a fixture in youth soccer for over three decades, Paul dedicated his life to growing the beautiful game at the grassroots level across Long Island and the five boroughs.
Paul’s journey with CJSL began long before he took the helm; he served as a club representative, referee assignor, and board member, earning the respect of coaches, parents, and players with his calm demeanor and deep institutional knowledge.
Under his leadership, the league expanded access to affordable soccer, strengthened referee development programs, and fostered partnerships that kept thousands of children on the pitch each season.
Known for answering emails at all hours and personally resolving scheduling conflicts, Paul embodied the volunteer spirit that powers youth sports. He believed every child deserved a safe, fun, and competitive place to play, and he worked tirelessly to make that vision reality, whether negotiating field permits or mentoring new club administrators.
Beyond CJSL, Paul was a familiar face at Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association meetings and a quiet advocate for inclusivity and sportsmanship across the region. His trademark line—“It’s about the kids”—guided every decision, from disciplinary hearings to tournament planning.
Family was Paul’s greatest joy. He leaves behind his wife, children, and grandchildren, all of whom grew up on CJSL sidelines cheering for teams he helped organize. His legacy lives in every goal celebrated, every referee whistle blown, and every young player who learned that soccer is more than a game; it’s a community.
The Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League honors Paul Kontonis with a moment of silence at all matches this weekend and the establishment of the Paul Kontonis Memorial Scholarship for aspiring youth coaches. New York youth soccer has lost one of its finest champions; the fields will never sound quite the same without him. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family.
