Phillip A. Daykin, a lifelong resident of Springfield, Illinois, passed away on December 15, 2025, at Springfield Memorial Hospital at the age of 89, concluding a life defined by dedicated service, deep faith, and unwavering commitment to family.
Born on July 3, 1936, in Springfield to Deane and Buraldine Crumly Daykin, he grew up rooted in the capital city’s community, building a legacy of reliability and quiet strength that touched generations. The Springfield area mourns the loss of a man whose professional tenure and civic involvement contributed meaningfully to local traditions and institutions.
Phillip married Mary Katherine Windmiller on June 28, 1959, sharing over six decades of partnership that formed the cornerstone of his personal fulfillment. He retired from Ameren CIPS in October 1998 after twenty-nine years as a Gas Training Associate, where his expertise ensured safe and efficient operations in the energy sector serving central Illinois. This career reflected his methodical approach and dedication to public utility, supporting the infrastructure that powered homes and businesses across the region.
An active member of Laurel United Methodist Church, Phillip embodied faith through consistent participation and spiritual fellowship. His affiliations extended to Masonic St. Pauls Lodge 500, Springfield Consistory, and ANSAR Shrine, where he upheld principles of brotherhood and charity. Additionally, he volunteered for the Rail Classic Golf Tournament, contributing time and enthusiasm to community events that fostered local engagement and philanthropy in Sangamon County.
At the heart of Phillip’s existence was his profound devotion to family, cherishing roles as father to daughters Carrie Daykin of Springfield and Sue (Curt) Volkmann of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, and sons David (Jodi) Daykin of Sherman and Steve (Jessica) Daykin of Plano, Texas.
He delighted in eleven grandchildren—Abigail Volkmann, Anna (Volkmann) Whitney (Grant Whitney), Alec Daykin, Daniel (Holly) Daykin, Quinn Daykin, Grant Daykin, Alyson Daykin, Trent Daykin and Kate Daykin, Gianna and Lyla Calles—and one great-granddaughter, Murphy May Daykin, alongside nephew Chip Horsley and several cousins. Preceded by parents, sister Carole Daykin Horsley, and niece Christine, his relational focus created enduring harmony.
Visitation will occur from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on December 22, 2025, at Laurel United Methodist Church, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. officiated by Rev. Dr. Kent Lolling, with burial at Oak Ridge Cemetery. These arrangements provide opportunities for the community to gather in tribute, honoring his impactful journey through faith and family in Springfield’s supportive networks.
