Family and friends in Peoria, Illinois, are mourning following the passing of SGT. Robert Graham Shanks on January 1, 2026. The 75-year-old veteran departed peacefully at his home, bringing to a gentle close a life defined by courageous service, steadfast loyalty to family and comrades, and a quiet joy in bringing delight to his community. His steady presence and warm spirit leave an enduring warmth in the hearts of all who knew him.
Born on June 29, 1950, in Kewanee, Illinois, to Leonard and Claire (Doane) Shanks, Robert grew up with the values of hard work and duty that would guide him throughout his years. He answered his country’s call with pride, serving honorably as both a United States Marine and an Army veteran during the Vietnam era.
His dedication earned him numerous decorations, including the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, and Navy Unit Citation—honors that reflected the depth of his commitment and sacrifice.
After his military service, Robert built a long and rewarding career at Caterpillar Inc., where he worked diligently for more than thirty years until his retirement. The discipline and teamwork he honed in uniform carried into his professional life, earning him the respect of colleagues who valued his reliability and strong work ethic. Even in retirement, he carried the pride of both his military and civilian accomplishments with quiet humility.
Robert found particular joy in staying connected with fellow veterans, regularly attending military reunions where stories were shared, bonds renewed, and memories honored. Closer to home, he became a beloved figure in his Peoria neighborhood for his elaborate Halloween displays each year, transforming his property into a wonderland of lights and decorations that brought smiles to children and nostalgic delight to adults passing by. These traditions reflected his generous heart and love for creating moments of happiness.
He is survived by his two sons, Michael (Erin) Shanks of Peoria and Jonathan (Mindy) Shanks of Texas; thirteen grandchildren: Amelia Shanks, Emma-liah Shanks, Ayrika Davis, Ciera Shanks, Jennifer Shanks, Kayla (Manuel) Rios, Megan Shanks, Josey Shanks, Layna Shanks, Kellie (Eric) Shirey, Samantha Collins, Jackson Fabia Jr., and Kamden Richie; eleven great-grandchildren; and three sisters: Janice (Jim) Hagen, Cindy (John) Quigley, and Barb (Tim) Gibbs, along with sister-in-law Mary Shanks. Preceded in death by his parents and brother Tom Shanks, Robert now rests among those who went before him, his legacy carried forward by the large and loving family he cherished.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary, with funeral services the following day, Wednesday, January 14, at 10:00 a.m., preceded by a half-hour visitation. Graveside services with full military honors will follow at Swan Lake Memory Gardens, a fitting tribute to a man whose life exemplified duty, devotion, and the quiet joys that strengthen communities and families alike.
