Known affectionately as “Showboat” for his larger-than-life personality and infectious laughter, the 72-year-old left an indelible mark on Carteret County through his generosity and joy. His sudden departure has united the community in fond remembrance of a man who lived with unbridled enthusiasm.
Stevie graduated from West Carteret High School in 1971, where he shone as a standout athlete in football and baseball, earning all-conference honors as a quarterback. He briefly attended Cape Fear Community College on a sports scholarship before returning to the coast to pursue family ventures. His education blended athletic drive with practical lessons in community leadership.
Professionally, Stevie owned and operated Levy’s Seafood Market in Morehead City for over 40 years, supplying fresh catches to local restaurants and families with his trademark hospitality. He mentored young watermen in sustainable fishing practices and volunteered with coastal conservation efforts. Colleagues remembered him as the go-to storyteller who turned every transaction into a shared adventure.
Stevie shared a beachfront home in Atlantic Beach with his wife of 48 years, creating a gathering spot for their three children and six grandchildren filled with summer bonfires and sunset sails. He stayed close to his siblings through annual family reunions at Bogue Inlet, where his grilled shrimp feasts drew everyone together. These bonds formed the joyful core of his salt-kissed life.
Stevie embraced a vibrant coastal routine with dawn fishing charters on Bogue Sound for reflection and exercise, followed by market shifts buzzing with customer chats. He maintained fitness through weekend paddleboarding and beach volleyball games with grandkids. Hobbies like carving wooden decoys for local art shows captured his creative, generous spirit.
Carteret County honors Stevie with a planned memorial gathering at the Atlantic Beach VFW, where fishing tales and laughter will echo his legacy. His family appreciates the community’s support during this time, channeling grief into scholarships for young coastal athletes in his name. The beaches fall a bit quieter without Showboat’s booming voice, but his warmth lingers in every wave.
