On November 28, 2025, the community of Pflugerville, Texas, mourned the tragic loss of Tomas Luis Gonzalez Jr., known affectionately as “Bearhand.” Tomas, a 42-year-old U.S. Coast Guard veteran, passed away unexpectedly at his home due to complications from a ruptured esophagus—an injury originally sustained during his military service.
Born and raised in Texas, Tomas developed a deep love for the outdoors and a strong sense of duty from an early age. His service in the Coast Guard was marked by bravery and compassion, earning him the nickname “Bearhand” for his powerful yet gentle presence during rescue missions. That same strength and warmth defined him long after his military career ended.
After leaving active duty, Tomas remained dedicated to serving others. He volunteered with veteran support groups, mentored young people in outdoor safety, and worked in logistics, where his dependability and calm problem-solving earned him the respect of colleagues and friends alike.
Tomas embraced life with a balance of adventure and tranquility. He loved kayaking on Lake Travis, hosting neighborhood barbecues, collecting vintage watches, and sharing stories of his Coast Guard days over a craft beer. He was known for his spontaneous road trips and his ability to find joy in both grand adventures and quiet moments at home.
Above all, Tomas cherished his family. He was a devoted husband and a loving father who filled weekends with laughter, trips to Austin’s parks, and time spent with his siblings and extended family. His sudden departure has left an irreplaceable void in their lives.
Tomas “Bearhand” Gonzalez Jr. will be remembered for his courage, his kindness, and the unwavering spirit with which he lived. His legacy continues to inspire acts of service and compassion throughout Pflugerville.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 2, from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. at Beck Funeral Home. Cremation and memorial details will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes support through a fundraiser established to assist with expenses during this difficult time.
