Born on August 5, 1952, in nearby Plum City as the daughter of Eldon and Marjorie (Bauer) Bechel, Darlene spent part of her early childhood in Salt Lake City, Utah, before returning with her mother and siblings to settle back in Durand. Those formative moves helped shape a resilient young woman who carried a strong sense of home and family wherever life took her.
She graduated from Durand High School in 1970 and soon began a lifelong career at the Pepin County Government Center, where she started right after school and rose through the ranks with consistent effort and reliability that earned her a place among the longest-serving employees. Her commitment reflected a deep appreciation for public service and the people she supported each day in her hometown.
On October 14, 1972, Darlene married Stephen A. Brunner at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Durand, beginning a partnership that would anchor their life together in the Durand area for more than five decades. Together they built a home centered on shared routines, quiet support, and the kind of everyday stability that strengthened their bond through the years.
By the time she retired in 2015 as Personnel Director after more than 41 years at the county, Darlene had become one of the most tenured and respected figures in local government operations, known for her steady hand in guiding policies and helping colleagues navigate their roles.
