A violent sequence of events ended in tragedy on the streets of downtown Houston in the early hours of Saturday, January 17, 2026. Around 12:45 a.m., a man fleeing in a stolen white Ford Edge, traveling northbound from the 2700 block of Travis Street, sped into the area of 1000 Travis Street. The high-rate-of-speed pursuit that began minutes earlier reached its catastrophic conclusion at this location.
At the wheel of the stolen vehicle was 30-year-old Johnathan Ordonez. Moments before the crash, the incident had originated several blocks away in the Midtown area, near Travis and McGowen Streets. There, Ordonez had allegedly been involved in a disturbance at a party before approaching a Ford Edge SUV, in which a mother and her 12-year-old son were sitting. Ordonez jumped into the driver’s seat, and despite the mother’s attempts to stop him, he forcibly pushed her from the vehicle as the boy escaped from the passenger side.
After taking the SUV, Ordonez sped northbound on Travis Street. While traveling at a high rate of speed, he lost control and crashed into two other vehicles. He first struck the rear of a white Kia Soul, and then hit the side of a maroon Toyota Tundra. The violent impact caused the Kia Soul to flip onto its roof.
The driver of the Kia was pronounced dead at the scene by responding Houston Fire Department paramedics. He was identified as 37-year-old David Nken Njock. According to his family, Njock was working as a ride-share driver when he was killed, leaving behind a wife and children who described him as a loving dad, husband, and friend. The driver of the Toyota Tundra was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Johnathan Ordonez was also injured in the crash and was taken to the hospital. After consulting with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, the Houston Police Department’s Vehicular Crimes Division formally charged Ordonez with murder in the 228th Criminal District Court for the death of David Nken Njock. As of the latest reports, Ordonez remained hospitalized, and a booking photo was not available.
The incident underscores the devastating chain of consequences that can stem from a single reckless act, transforming an ordinary night into a fatal catastrophe for an innocent family man. The Houston Police Department continues its investigation into the full scope of the incident, which began with a disturbance and an alleged carjacking and culminated in a deadly downtown collision.
