With deep regret, we announce the passing of Dr. Wayne Sebastianelli, a renowned orthopedic surgeon, dedicated physician, and longtime professor at The Pennsylvania State University, who died on April 26, 2026. His distinguished career in sports medicine and orthopedics left an indelible mark on athletes, patients, students, and colleagues across Pennsylvania and the nation.
Dr. Sebastianelli earned his B.A. in Biology and Anthropology, Magna Cum Laude, and his M.D. with honors from the University of Rochester. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Rochester and a sports medicine fellowship at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. These strong foundations propelled him into a career defined by clinical excellence and innovation in treating complex sports-related injuries.
For more than two decades, he served as Medical Director of Penn State Sports Medicine and Director of Athletic Medicine for Penn State Athletics. He held prominent roles including Kalenak Professor in Orthopaedics, Associate Chief Medical Officer for Penn State Health Centre County Region, and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the University Park Regional Campus. He also served as Chief of Staff at Mount Nittany Medical Center and Surgical Center for 16 years.
Known for his surgical expertise in knee, shoulder, ankle, hand, and ligament procedures, Dr. Sebastianelli helped countless athletes and active individuals recover and return to their passions. Beyond technical skill, patients and colleagues praised his compassionate bedside manner and ability to explain complex conditions with clarity and empathy. He published extensively and mentored generations of orthopedic and sports medicine professionals.
A leader in his field, he held leadership positions in prestigious organizations, including serving as Past President of the American Orthopaedic Association. His commitment extended to research, education, and advancing standards in sports medicine while maintaining a strong focus on patient-centered care.
Dr. Wayne Sebastianelli will be remembered as a trailblazing surgeon, inspiring educator, and compassionate healer whose contributions to orthopedics and sports medicine continue to benefit athletes and patients long after his passing. His legacy of excellence, mentorship, and dedication lives on through the many lives he touched during his remarkable career.
