On September 18, 2018, Emanuel Boneza, a 32-year-old man of Rwandan origin who was born on December 25, 1985, passed away in Avalon, Pennsylvania. Bridgeville resident Boneza was shot many times during a fight that started in a forested ravine near the intersection of Oak and South Starr avenues in Avalon, close to the Bellevue boundary. Boneza and two younger companions were hanging out in the quiet Pittsburgh area during the afternoon and evening when the event happened.
Boneza was with 20-year-old Musa Ramadhan Muya and 20-year-old Salim Hamadi Salim in the ravine, where the group took turns firing a semi-automatic Ruger SR22 pistol that Muya had brought. As the only one of legal drinking age, Boneza left at one point to purchase beer for the group.
Upon his return, a dispute erupted when Muya became upset about the type of beer purchased. The confrontation escalated rapidly after Boneza fired the gun a couple more times and asked Muya to reload it.
Muya allegedly reloaded the pistol and then shot Boneza four times. The victim stumbled out of the ravine area onto a nearby street, where witnesses observed him with his hands up before collapsing in the roadway near the intersection of South Starr and West avenues. Boneza was transported to Allegheny General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police located Muya and Salim walking in the area shortly afterward and recovered the gun hidden behind a rock in the ravine.
Musa Ramadhan Muya of Northview Heights was charged with criminal homicide and weapons violations. Salim Hamadi Salim faced charges including tampering with evidence and weapons violations. Videos recovered from Salim’s phone showed the three men taking turns firing the weapon earlier in the day. The case drew attention due to the seemingly trivial trigger of the fatal dispute over beer among acquaintances.
In April 2019, Muya pleaded guilty to third-degree murder. He was later sentenced to 7 to 14 years in prison by Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Edward J. Borkowski. The sentencing reflected the circumstances of the impulsive shooting that ended the life of a man described in obituaries as a kind individual with family ties in the Pittsburgh area. Boneza’s death was one of several homicides investigated that year in the Allegheny County region.
