With deep regret, we announce the passing of Gordon Joseph Peterson, 80, of Polson, Montana, who died suddenly on January 7, 2026. A man known for his big heart, quick wit, and love of family, Gordon lived a full life marked by service, hard work, creativity, and deep community ties in the Flathead Valley.
Gordon’s parents, Ira Nicholas and Caroline Kraft Peterson, were born in Kalispell on December 20, 1945. 1964 saw him graduate from Polson High School. In 1969, he was recruited into the U.S. Army, serving as an E4 11B20 Light Weapons Infantryman until 1970. In order to further his study, he was granted an honorable discharge. He was a student body president at North Idaho College from 1959 to 1960 before attending the University of Montana Western.
His lifelong passion was woodworking, cabinet making, and building furniture. He spent time in California for several years, where he made significant positive changes in his life, before returning to Polson, where he spent the remainder of his days. Gordon took great pride in his craftsmanship and enjoyed creating beautiful pieces with his hands.
A celebration of life for Gordon will be held on Friday, May 9, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Elks Club in Polson. This gathering will give family, friends, and community members an opportunity to share stories, laughter, and memories of a man who touched so many lives.
Gordon Peterson will be remembered as a devoted family man, a proud veteran, a skilled craftsman, and a warm-hearted individual who brought humor and kindness to those around him. His legacy of service, creativity, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and all who knew him in Polson and beyond.
