Around the early morning hours, just after midnight or in the predawn time, 17-year-old Hunter Howell drove his 2018 Chevrolet Silverado along Marengo County Road 44. The stretch near the small community of Dayton, about two miles south, is a straight but isolated rural road with ditches on both sides and few lights to guide drivers in the dark.
For reasons that investigators are still examining, the truck suddenly left the roadway as it traveled along this section of Marengo County Road 44. It veered into a ditch beside the pavement, losing control in the remote area where help is not close by and cell service can be spotty.
The Silverado struck an object with heavy force, likely a tree or culvert in the ditch, causing major damage to the vehicle. The impact trapped Hunter inside the cab, turning a routine late-night drive into a fatal accident in the quiet west Alabama countryside.
Alabama Law Enforcement Agency troopers and local emergency teams rushed to the scene on Marengo County Road 44 near Dayton after receiving reports of the crash. They worked hard to reach the wrecked truck but found the young driver with injuries too severe to survive, and he was pronounced dead at the location.
