A head-on collision on Highway 18 in Pinon Hills claimed three lives on Saturday, May 9, 2026. The crash happened east of Blanco Road at approximately 7:50 p.m. A Jeep Wrangler veered into the eastbound lane and struck a Honda Odyssey minivan.
The driver of the minivan, 58-year-old Javier Hernandez Ramirez of Pacoima, died alongside passengers Alfredo Orozco, 18, of Covina, and Maricela Orozco, 51, of Pacoima. All three were trapped inside the wreckage and pronounced dead at the scene.
The California Highway Patrol reported that the Honda had been traveling eastbound when the Jeep entered its path. Emergency crews from the San Bernardino County Fire Department found the minivan blocking eastbound lanes while the Jeep came to rest on the south shoulder.
Three additional passengers inside the Honda survived but sustained serious injuries. Two were airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center in critical condition. A third was transported by ground ambulance. The driver of the Jeep also suffered major injuries and was taken to St. Mary Medical Center.
Authorities have stated that drugs and alcohol are not suspected to have played a role in the crash. Investigators continue to examine whether speed or driver error contributed to the Jeep crossing into oncoming traffic. Highway 18 remained closed in both directions for several hours as crews worked to extricate trapped victims, recover the deceased, and remove debris. The roadway reopened around 5 a.m. Sunday.
The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office formally identified the three deceased. Maricela Orozco was described as a longtime resident of Pacoima. Alfredo Orozco was a young man from Covina. Family members have not released further details about their lives or survivors. No funeral arrangements have been publicly announced.
The crash has drawn attention to the dangers of rural highways such as State Route 18, where narrow lanes and high speeds have contributed to previous fatal collisions.
