Kerry Ann McManus died away peacefully on April 14, 2026, at the age of 56, following a valiant fight with illness that she battled with the same elegance and dedication she brought to every aspect of her life. The Stratford, Ontario community is silently gathering its memories around her.
Her departure has left a noticeable quiet in the city she loved and served, where colleagues, students, and neighbors now share stories of a woman whose warmth and commitment created lasting connections across classrooms, council chambers, and everyday encounters.
Born on November 7, 1969, Kerry grew up with roots firmly planted in the Stratford area, where her curiosity and kindness began to shape the person she would become long before her public roles took center stage. Those early years instilled in her a deep appreciation for community and learning that would later guide her through both professional and personal milestones with quiet purpose.
She built a meaningful career as an educator with the Avon Maitland District School Board, teaching at Stratford District Secondary School where her patience, intelligence, and genuine care for students shone through whether she was guiding lessons in French or supporting young minds in the school library. Colleagues and former students recall how her approachable style turned challenging subjects into opportunities for growth and how she made every learner feel valued and capable.
Beyond the classroom, Kerry dedicated herself to public service as a city councillor, championing community and environmental causes with tireless advocacy that included climate initiatives and collaborative efforts to heal local landscapes for future generations. Her big heart and thoughtful approach helped bridge differences, leaving council colleagues and residents inspired by her vision of unity and practical action that extended far beyond meetings.
In addition to her father Barry McManus, brothers Brad McManus and his wife Yvonne, and Kirk McManus and his wife Linda, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, extended family members, and a broad circle of friends who experienced her boundless love in innumerable ways, Kerry was a devoted wife to John Hishon, whom she described as the love of her life with a kindness matched by quiet strength. Predeceased by her mother Barbara, she candidly chronicled her battle with illness, transforming even that challenging phase into one of legacy and connection.
Visitation will take place on Friday, May 1, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Avondale United Church at 194 Avondale Avenue in Stratford, followed by a funeral service on Saturday, May 2 at 11:00 a.m. at the same location, where those who knew her will celebrate a life woven like a beautiful tapestry of teaching, service, advocacy, and boundless compassion that continues to touch everyone she left behind.
