The early morning quiet outside the Quiet Corner sports bar in Winston-Salem was shattered just after 4 a.m. on Sunday, April 12, 2026. When officers arrived at the 2800 block of Indiana Avenue at 4:18 a.m., they found 34-year-old Calvin Samuel Johnson suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency Medical Services rushed Johnson to a nearby hospital, but despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Police notified his next of kin and confirmed that the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident.
For two days, investigators worked to piece together what had happened outside the sports bar. On Tuesday, April 14, 2026, they took 37-year-old Brittany Deshay Grace into custody. According to court documents, Grace was charged with felony voluntary manslaughter in connection with Johnson’s death. Police warrants state that she “unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously did kill and slay Calvin Johnson.”
Grace, who is the sister of the Quiet Corner’s owner Edward Fulks, was reportedly working as security personnel at the establishment at the time of the shooting, a detail confirmed in court filings and by local reporting.
