On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at approximately 1:22 a.m., Fort Wayne Police Department officers responded to a disturbance report in the 4500 block of Bowser Avenue on the city’s south side. Upon arrival, officers found 49-year-old Ali Gyi unresponsive inside the residence suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene. The Allen County Coroner’s Office later ruled his death a homicide caused by a gunshot wound to the head.
According to court documents filed following the incident, multiple witnesses reported that a group had been playing cards at the home prior to the shooting with no verbal arguments or conflicts occurring beforehand. Witnesses stated that Ya Sin, 47, entered the home and initially sat next to Gyi before getting up and walking to the kitchen.
When Sin returned, he suddenly shot Gyi, who was sitting next to Sin’s wife while playing cards. One witness recounted that Sin asked his wife, “Why are you sitting next to him, I don’t like him,” before pointing the gun at his wife, then at himself, to force her to leave the home with him.
Court documents detail that eight witnesses were interviewed, and four of them reported that Sin threatened to kill his wife and then threatened to take his own life. Multiple witnesses corroborated that Sin was known to become jealous when drinking.
Several also noted that Sin was not welcome at the gathering but came anyway. When Sin was arrested, he told police he had acted in self-defense, claiming Gyi had threatened him and his wife with a gun. However, none of the eight witnesses reported seeing Gyi in possession of a firearm.
Investigators tracked cellular pings from Sin’s phone and located him hiding in an alleyway. Sin attempted to flee, leading police on a vehicle chase. Stop sticks deployed by law enforcement halted the pursuit approximately 2.5 miles from the shooting scene. Sin was arrested and faces preliminary charges of murder, kidnapping while armed with a deadly weapon, and resisting law enforcement while fleeing in a vehicle. If convicted on all charges and given maximum sentences, Sin faces up to 83 years in prison.
Sin’s wife told investigators that her husband was living with Gyi at the time of the shooting and that the two used drugs and alcohol together according to her witness statement. The Fort Wayne Police Department’s Homicide Team, Crime Scene Unit, and Air Support Unit responded to the scene to conduct the investigation. During the initial stages, a language barrier prompted the request for an interpreter to assist in gathering accurate information. An initial hearing was scheduled for the Friday following his arrest.
The case remains under active investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department Homicide Team.
