He had earned his place in the kitchen through talent and dedication while simultaneously pursuing coursework at the City Colleges of Chicago. His mother, Edita, had been a loyal member of Chef Smith’s staff for more than twenty years, making Darwin’s death a profound loss not only for his immediate family but for an entire restaurant community that had watched him mature into a skilled culinary professional.
