The Enid community is mourning the death of 53-year-old Kendra Diane Smith, a first-grade teacher at Coolidge Elementary, who was killed in a domestic shooting Wednesday night in what authorities have confirmed was a murder-suicide.
Police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire around 7:50 p.m. in the area of 23rd Street and East Cedar Avenue, less than two miles from the school where Smith taught. Neighbors in the residential neighborhood said they took cover inside their homes after hearing shots ring out in the vicinity of Smith’s residence.
Upon arrival, officers located Smith suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the 2300 block of East Cedar Avenue. She was rushed to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Investigators identified the shooter as 56-year-old Jeffrey Len Smith of Oklahoma City, her estranged husband, who fled the scene following the attack.
A short time later, law enforcement located Jeffrey Smith’s vehicle at the Love’s Travel Stop at 4104 E. Randolph Avenue, several miles from the crime scene. Inside the vehicle, officers found him deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities have not determined a motive and stated the case remains under active investigation as detectives continue gathering evidence and interviewing individuals who knew the couple.
The violence has sent shockwaves through Enid, particularly within the Coolidge Elementary community where Kendra Smith spent her days teaching young children. Colleagues described her as an educator whose patience and warmth created a classroom environment where students felt both safe and inspired to learn.
