Just after 1 a.m. on April 29, the Long Beach 710 Freeway near Carson became the site of a deadly chain reaction. A 24-year-old man, later named as Luciano Jaurergui Galvan, died at the scene. The crash happened at the Del Amo Boulevard exit, a stretch of freeway that sees heavy traffic during the day but was nearly empty in the early morning hours.
California Highway Patrol investigators arrived to find four vehicles scattered across the northbound lanes. A white Kia SUV. A gray sedan. A dark colored sedan. A black sedan. The force of the pileup had pushed at least one of them down an embankment, where it came to rest off the pavement. Airbags hung deflated from steering wheels and dashboards, evidence of the violent impact.
Dispatch logs show that officers were sent to the location at approximately 1:01 a.m. They found significant debris strewn across the asphalt. Vehicle parts. Broken glass. Fluids leaking onto the road. Traffic was stopped immediately as emergency crews moved in to check for survivors.
Galvan was riding in one of the cars. His injuries were too severe. Paramedics worked on him at the scene, but he was pronounced dead where he sat or lay. No other fatalities were reported. Officials did not provide details about whether other occupants were hurt or how badly.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office formally identified Galvan as the victim. Twenty four years old. A young man whose life ended on a freeway exit ramp before dawn. His family is now left to plan a funeral while investigators piece together how four vehicles ended up piled against each other in the middle of the night.
