Seventy‑eight‑year‑old Olimpio Rodriguez Cervantes of San Marcos was killed on April 21, 2026, in a bicycle crash near Palomar College in the 1900 block of West San Marcos Boulevard, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. Deputies were dispatched shortly after noon following reports of a collision involving a bicyclist and an SUV.
Investigators stated that Cervantes had been riding a bicycle in the westbound lanes of West San Marcos Boulevard when he was struck by a white Lexus SUV. The crash occurred just west of Rancho Santa Fe Road, an area with a posted speed limit of 45 mph.
Emergency responders found Cervantes lying in the roadway with severe injuries. Deputies and paramedics attempted lifesaving measures, but he was pronounced dead at 12:26 p.m., according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Authorities reported that the driver of the SUV remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. No arrests were made, and officials stated that the circumstances leading up to the collision were still under investigation.
The Sheriff’s Department noted that it was unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. The collision caused temporary road closures along West San Marcos Boulevard as deputies documented the scene and collected evidence.
