The Harris County law enforcement community is in mourning following the tragic death of 33-year-old Deputy Ricky Zaragosa, a three-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, who was killed in a motorcycle crash in the early hours of Wednesday, February 18, 2026.
The collision occurred at approximately 2:28 a.m. at the intersection of Aldine Westfield Road and Ciderwood Drive in north Harris County, near the Spring area. Deputy Zaragosa was pronounced dead at the scene after his motorcycle collided with another vehicle.
The driver of the white vehicle involved in the crash remained at the scene and has been fully cooperating with investigators from the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office. According to Captain Aaron Strain, there were no signs of intoxication from that driver.
However, a separate and complex twist emerged when an off-duty deputy from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, identified as 28-year-old Aylin Balderas, was arrested at the scene and charged with driving while intoxicated. Authorities were clear that Balderas was not involved in the crash that killed Zaragosa.
Court records reveal the heartbreaking connection between the two deputies: Balderas was Zaragosa’s significant other. According to the affidavit, the couple had shared three or four drinks at a nearby bar, and Balderas was following Zaragosa home from the establishment when she came upon the fatal crash.
She remained at the scene and awaited law enforcement, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, which stated that there is “no credible information that the off-duty MCSO deputy was involved in the crash and that she was not involved in Zaragosa’s death in any way.” Balderas, who joined MCSO in November 2025, has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the case.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez expressed profound sorrow at the loss, posting on social media, “It is with profound sadness and deep sympathy that we announce the loss of a @HCSOTexas deputy. Please join us in praying for the loved ones and friends of our deputy.” Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman echoed the sentiment, calling it “a heartbreaking loss for the law enforcement community and the entire region.” Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo also extended condolences, thanking first responders for their swift response.
