It is my painful duty to inform you of the tragic death of Sergeant First Class Sean William Acker, a Howell Township native and devoted public servant on February 5, 2026. The circumstances involve long-term complications from a duty-related injury, a private family matter, and we ask for your respect as we grieve.
Sean’s health challenges began in 2022 with a severe medical emergency during recovery from surgery addressing leg issues stemming from his rigorous role as head physical training instructor at the State Police Academy.
A blood clot led to cardiac arrest and pulmonary embolism, causing an extended period without heartbeat that resulted in traumatic brain injury and additional complications requiring ventilator support and dialysis. Despite these profound setbacks following prior double hip replacement, he faced years of rehabilitation with extraordinary courage and determination.
Sean proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1998, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant as one of the original Ravens and forging lifelong bonds through discipline and shared missions. Transitioning honorably, he fulfilled his dream by joining the New Jersey State Police in 2006, rising to Sergeant First Class with assignments including the Division Staff Section.
Sean built a loving family life with his wife, Lisa, a fellow State Trooper he met during his recruit days and reconnected with profoundly, creating a partnership of mutual respect and devotion. They raised two cherished children, Connor and Samantha, who remained the center of his world, bringing him immense joy even through his challenges. Extended family, including parents Cyd and Mark Acker, brothers Grant and James, and in-laws, provided unwavering support.
Having grown up playing basketball, baseball, and soccer in Howell, Sean is well-known for his kind disposition, captivating charisma, quiet strength, and sense of humor. He has remained thankful and modest throughout his life. He embodied perseverance and an appreciation for life’s connections in the face of hardship by enjoying family time, going to his kids’ events, going to the beach, receiving water treatment, and watching sports. His character was shaped by his devotion as a spouse, father, son, brother, and friend.
On Sunday, February 8, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., there will be a visitation at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home in Freehold Township. On Monday, there will be a funeral mass at St. Veronica Church in Howell at 11:30 a.m. The people of New Jersey celebrate the remarkable example of service and heart he leaves behind as they pay tribute to him by making gifts to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
