A 34-year-old woman was fatally shot while on her way to a medical appointment on the afternoon of Tuesday, February 3, 2026. The shooting occurred inside the Wood Street Parking Structure at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), a garage located at 1100 South Wood Street. The victim was found by police on the third level of this parking structure, in the Illinois Medical District of Chicago’s Near West Side.
Authorities responded to the scene after receiving reports of a person shot. According to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, the victim was identified as Shawnquanice Q. Kimbrough, a Chicago resident. Police found Kimbrough inside a vehicle with a gunshot wound to the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 2 p.m.
A critical detail of the incident is that Kimbrough’s infant child was discovered unharmed inside the vehicle at the scene. The child was located in a car seat and was subsequently taken to a hospital for observation as a precaution. This detail has amplified the tragedy of the incident and the impact on the victim’s family.
The University of Illinois Chicago police, who are leading the investigation, have stated the shooting may be related to a domestic dispute. This fatal shooting in the medical district garage was one of two unrelated deadly shootings that occurred in close proximity on the Near West Side that afternoon. The other incident, which involved multiple victims, took place at a White Castle restaurant parking lot approximately 0.75 miles away.
