The rugby league community is mourning the loss of Terry Williams, a dedicated historian and author whose lifelong commitment to preserving the legacy of the Newtown Jets came to an end on February 25, 2026, at the age of 62. His passing occurred just hours after he had enthusiastically presided over the club’s season launch event, a final act of devotion to the team he loved.

Hailing from the Marrickville area and entering the world in 1963, Terry was the child of Warren Williams, who had competed in lower grades for Newtown. His formative years were spent in Ashcroft among six siblings, where his fascination with sporting history and his cherished Bluebags took root. By profession an educator, he transformed his dual passions for storytelling and rugby league into meticulous historical documentation commencing in the early 1990s.

Through dedication spanning decades, Terry ascended to become the foremost authority on Newtown Rugby League Football Club heritage. He produced two definitive works chronicling the organization: “Out of the Blue” published in 1993, followed by “Through Blue Eyes” in 2008. His expertise also benefited the NRL Museum, where he served as historian for numerous years, breathing life into the sport’s past for subsequent generations.

Beyond his historical pursuits, Terry prioritized family above all else. He leaves behind his wife Denise, along with their daughter, two sons, and two grandchildren who survive him. His existence beautifully balanced unwavering commitment to rugby league preservation with the roles of devoted spouse, father, and grandfather.

The unexpected nature of his departure has sent shockwaves through the Newtown Jets organization, the NSWRL administrative body, and rugby league circles nationwide. An outpouring of tributes has emerged, highlighting not merely his exceptional knowledge but equally his characteristic generosity, warmth, and eagerness to impart wisdom to fellow enthusiasts.

Terry Williams will forever be remembered among the most ardent and informed guardians of Newtown Jets tradition. His scholarly contributions will continue enlightening and inspiring generations yet to come. May his bereaved family and friends find comfort in the abundant memories and enduring legacy he has bestowed upon the rugby league world.
