The Wytheville community in Southwest Virginia is quietly honoring the memory of Vaughn Cassell, a longtime resident since 1972 who passed away peacefully at home on April 14, 2026, at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy of quiet dedication that touched many through his years of service and personal pursuits.
Vaughn was born in neighboring Bishop, Virginia, on New Year’s Eve in 1935 to Ray Gordon Cassell and Ann May Harman. Growing up, he was deeply rooted in the industrious culture of the area. He eventually graduated from Tazewell High School in 1953 and West Virginia Business College.
After beginning work in accounting and sales at Jewell Ridge Coal Company, he joined Nationwide Insurance in 1961 as a claims adjuster shortly following his marriage, a role he held with distinction for 37 years while serving counties around Wise and later Wytheville. He shared five decades of marriage with Virginia Lucille Johnson before her passing in 2010, building a family foundation that remained central even in later years.
Vaughn’s commitment to service extended beyond his professional path, as he spent time in the Army Reserve and became deeply involved with the American Legion, where he participated in the honor guard and firing team to perform graveside ceremonies for fellow veterans until health challenges stepped in. A member of Wytheville Presbyterian Church who served on its session and finance committee, he brought the same sense of responsibility to his faith community that defined his broader civic efforts.
His passion for genealogy blossomed after his mother shared a book on Harman family history, leading to more than 50 years of research that connected him with distant cousins across the country and inspired volunteer work with the Wythe County Genealogical and Historical Association, where he served on the board. He also proudly traced his lineage as a member of the Lt. David Cox chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, confirming descent from eight Revolutionary patriots including three from the Harman line.
A memorial service took place on April 18 at Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor John Langham officiating, followed by interment at West End Cemetery where American Legion Post 9 provided full military honors, as family and friends gathered to celebrate a life enriched by faith, history, and quiet patriotism; he is remembered by his companion Liz Groseclose, son Ray Vaughn Cassell II of Madison, Alabama, sister Phyllis Morris of Bristol, brother-in-law Samuel Carl Johnson of Richmond, three grandchildren, and a wide circle of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
