To our University of Connecticut family, we write today with immense sadness to share news of a terrible loss that affects us all. Zachary Rubin, a 19-year-old first-year student from New Jersey, passed away suddenly on February 2, 2026. Born on December 19, 2006, Zachary’s brief but vibrant life touched countless individuals with his joyful presence.
The sudden and unexpected nature of Zachary’s passing has deepened the sorrow across UConn, where students, faculty, and staff received the heartbreaking announcement from university officials expressing shared devastation over losing a member of their community.
Zachary Rubin was celebrated for his effervescent personality, marked by genuine warmth, thoughtfulness, and kindness that uplifted everyone fortunate enough to cross his path. His engaging smile and signature twinkle in his eyes created instant connections, fostering an atmosphere of positivity in classrooms, dorms, and social circles.
As a straight-A finance major at the University of Connecticut, Zachary demonstrated exceptional diligence and intellectual brilliance, complemented by his role as a dedicated assistant manager at Panera Bread where he balanced responsibilities with professionalism. His passion for music shone through his talent as an exceptional alto saxophone player, contributing meaningfully to ensembles like the Varsity/Pep Band and Symphonic Wind Ensemble.
Zachary is survived by his loving father Ben, mother Oksana, brother Joshua, aunt Cheryl, cousins Sarah, Rachel, and Jonah Katz, grandfather Arnold, grandmothers Phyllis Rubin and Svetlana Vechero, and his beloved minibernadoodle Zoe, along with countless friends who formed an extended family of support.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 6, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Menorah Chapels at Millburn, 2950 Vauxhall Road, Vauxhall, New Jersey, with livestream available and burial following at Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Iselin. These gatherings offer spaces for remembrance and solidarity amid profound heartache.
Though his time was unexpectedly brief, he leaves behind inspiration through his joyful essence and the meaningful connections he forged. As the community heals and supports one another, they celebrate the extraordinary warmth of a young soul whose presence continues to resonate with gratitude and enduring affection.
