Sheriff Bryan Bailey stated that Kurt Tyler Birdsong, 56, fatally shot his relatives Walter Earnest Birdsong Jr., 62, and Amanda Lynn Birdsong, 43, before dying by suicide inside the home on Monterey Road.
Deputies were dispatched just before 4:00 p.m. on Friday, May 8, 2026, to the 1400 block of Monterey Road near Florence, Mississippi, after a 911 call reported gunfire. When officers arrived, they learned that multiple family members living on the property had been engaged in an ongoing dispute over family land. Investigators believe the conflict escalated into gunfire, resulting in the deaths of Walter and Amanda Birdsong.
The suspect, Kurt Tyler Birdsong, barricaded himself inside the residence following the shootings. The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office deployed its SWAT team, negotiators, and technical response personnel, while also requesting assistance from the FBI Jackson Field Office, the Mississippi Office of Homeland Security, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Clinton Bomb Squad due to the family’s involvement in a firearms‑related business.
Nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution, and armored vehicles were brought in to secure the perimeter. Negotiators attempted multiple times to contact Birdsong, but those efforts were unsuccessful. Eventually, deputies breached the residence using armored and technical equipment. Inside, they discovered Birdsong deceased in a bathroom from a self‑inflicted gunshot wound.
The Rankin County Deputy Coroner Cliff Dunlap identified the victims as Walter E. Birdsong Jr., 62, and Amanda L. Birdsong, 43, both of whom were pronounced dead at the scene. Sheriff Bailey confirmed that Birdsong’s suicide ended the standoff, leaving three members of the same family dead.
The investigation remains ongoing, with the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office working alongside the FBI and ATF.
