A Boundary County woman who once operated an unlicensed daycare in the small community of Naples faced full accountability in Bonner County District Court after a jury convicted her of sexually abusing two children under the age of 16 more than a decade earlier.
Katherine Cowell, 51 or 52-years-old depending on the reporting date, had maintained a seemingly ordinary life in rural northern Idaho until her arrest alongside her husband in February 2025 triggered a lengthy legal process that culminated in a swift guilty verdict and a rescheduled sentencing hearing that will determine whether she spends the rest of her life behind bars.
Cowell and her husband Richard Cowell III were taken into custody on February 5, 2025 after Richard’s brother the Bonners Ferry police chief turned them in following family reports of sexual offenses against minors.
The allegations centered on lewd conduct that prosecutors said occurred between 2012 and 2015 or 2016 at their Naples residence and involved two victims who were then children under 16 and are now adults. Cowell had run an unlicensed daycare out of the home and the couple’s swinger lifestyle later became a point of contention in her defense though the jury ultimately rejected those arguments.
The two day jury trial opened on February 9 2026 in Sandpoint with Bonner County Prosecutor Louis Marshall presenting evidence that included victim testimony family accounts and a video of Cowell’s arrest interview. Marshall told jurors in his closing argument that the victims told the truth and she is guilty emphasizing the need for common sense in weighing the consistent stories of grooming and abuse.
Defense attorney Catherine Enright argued the claims stemmed from family disapproval of the couple’s lifestyle and possible financial motives but after hearing from both victims an expert witness and Cowell herself who testified in her own defense the panel needed only about four hours to reach its decision.
The jury returned guilty verdicts on both counts of lewd conduct with a minor under 16 just before 7 p.m. on the second day of trial prompting visible relief and hugs among the victims and their families inside the Bonner County Courthouse. Cowell who had remained free on bond during much of the pretrial period was immediately taken into custody and has been held without bail at the Bonner County Jail ever since.
The case which was originally expected to last a full week wrapped up rapidly underscoring the strength of the state’s evidence in a venue chosen for the trial in Sandpoint even though the offenses originated in neighboring Boundary County.
Richard Cowell III had already pleaded guilty to related charges of criminal conspiracy and lewd conduct with a minor receiving a sentence of 17 years fixed with additional time possible before parole eligibility in a separate proceeding that did not influence the jury’s view of his wife’s independent culpability.
One victim described grooming that escalated over years while the other reported abuse primarily by the husband with Katherine participating at times. The couple’s home in Naples had served as the setting for much of the alleged misconduct and the family’s decision to come forward through the police chief relative set the entire investigation in motion.
Sentencing for Katherine Cowell originally set for April 20, 2026 has been rescheduled to Thursday April 23 at 3:30 p.m. in the Bonner County Courthouse at 215 South First Avenue in Sandpoint where Judge Susie Jensen will preside over a hearing expected to include at least one victim impact statement.
Each count carries a potential life sentence so Cowell could face up to two consecutive life terms if the judge imposes the maximum. No sentencing recommendation had been filed in the court system as of the latest updates leaving the exact outcome uncertain as the rural Idaho community awaits final resolution in a case that began with charges filed more than 14 months earlier.
