April 17 began like any other morning for Norma Balgos Villegas. The 84 year old Antioch resident went out for a walk. She likely followed the same route she had taken many times before. But at the intersection of Country Hills Drive and Wolverine Way, just after 8 a.m., her routine ended.
A vehicle traveling through the intersection struck her. The driver did not flee. Witnesses called for help. Police and emergency personnel arrived to find Villegas on the ground, seriously injured. Officers provided immediate medical assistance at the scene. Paramedics took over and rushed her to a nearby hospital.
Inside the trauma bay, medical staff fought to save her. Their efforts were not enough. Villegas was pronounced dead at the hospital. The Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office formally identified her. She was an Antioch resident. She had been out walking. That was all.
The driver stayed. The driver cooperated with investigators. Police have not released any information suggesting impairment or other contributing factors. The Antioch Police Department’s Traffic Division documented the scene, collected evidence, took witness statements, and photographed roadway markings.
The investigation is still active. Detectives are looking for additional witnesses or surveillance footage from the area around Country Hills Drive and Wolverine Way. They want to understand exactly how the collision unfolded. What was the vehicle doing? Where was Villegas in the crosswalk? Was there enough light? Were there any distractions?
