On Sunday, February 15, 2026, a violent head-on collision on U.S. 50 in Ripley County claimed the life of a 37-year-old Madison man and sent a Florida truck driver to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash occurred shortly before 3:00 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 50 and County Road 600 West, near the small community of Holton in southeastern Indiana. When emergency crews arrived, they discovered a catastrophic scene: a passenger vehicle overturned in the roadway and a commercial truck overturned off the north side of the highway.
Indiana State Police identified the deceased driver as Tyler Dukes, 37, of Madison, Indiana, who was operating a 2008 Mercury Mariner. According to investigators, Dukes was traveling eastbound on U.S. 50 when, for reasons still under investigation, his SUV crossed the center line into the path of a westbound 2022 Volvo semi-truck pulling a trailer. The vehicles collided nearly head-on in the westbound lane of the highway, a catastrophic impact that left both vehicles overturned.
Dukes was pronounced deceased at the scene by responding authorities. The driver of the commercial truck was identified as Richard Murray, 26, of Spring Hill, Florida, who was transported to Margaret Mary Hospital in Batesville for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover. The Indiana State Police-Versailles District Crash Reconstruction Team was called to the scene to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
Multiple emergency agencies responded to the scene, including the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana Conservation Officers, Holton Fire Department, Versailles Fire and Rescue, Ripley County EMS, and the Ripley County Coroner’s Office. The roadway was closed for several hours as investigators documented evidence and reconstructed the crash sequence. Toxicology results for both drivers are currently pending as part of the ongoing investigation.
