The Temple community in Central Texas has been quietly reflecting on the life of Robert Joseph “RJ” Johnson, who passed away on April 12, 2026, at the age of 61 after building a full and purposeful existence marked by service, loyalty, and a quiet strength that left a lasting impression on those around him.
His presence in the area had become a steady source of warmth and reliability, where friends and neighbors now share stories of a man whose everyday actions spoke volumes about resilience and quiet care.
Born on March 16, 1965, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Richard Carl Johnson and Leona Ruth (Wise) Johnson, RJ spent his formative years in Bondurant before graduating from Marshalltown High School, where the values of hard work and responsibility from that era shaped a young man ready to contribute meaningfully to the world. Those early experiences in the Midwest instilled a practical outlook and a deep sense of duty that guided him through every chapter ahead.
In 1989 he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army, where he excelled as a mechanic and earned the Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and National Defense Service Medal for his dedicated efforts. Following an honorable discharge, he continued his skilled trade as a civilian contractor mechanic at Fort Hood, Texas, working faithfully in that role until retirement and bringing the same level of commitment to every task.
RJ carried a warm spirit and easy laughter that made people feel instantly welcome in his company, turning ordinary interactions into moments of genuine connection. In his free time he found real satisfaction in metal detecting across open fields and carefully expanding his coin collection, pursuits that reflected his patient curiosity and appreciation for the hidden stories in everyday objects.
He is remembered with love by his wife Pamela Johnson and their children Cody (Nikki) Johnson, Jacob Johnson, Jessica (Hunter) Jost, Julia Jost, Tara (Keith) Hetchler, and Sandra (Henry) Rowe, along with seven grandchildren who brought him special joy. He is also survived by siblings Jim Johnson, Mike Johnson, and Diane (Brian) Peter, while he was preceded in death by his parents and by Kelly Irene Johnson.
A graveside service with full military honors will take place on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, allowing family and friends to gather and honor a life defined by faithful service and heartfelt presence; arrangements are under the care of Dossman Funeral Home in Belton, and the family extends deep thanks to all who have offered comfort during this time.
