A shooting in downtown Athens early Saturday morning left two men dead and a third fighting for his life. Police are still working to understand what happened and why. It started just after 2:20 a.m. Officers with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department were sent to a parking lot in the 400 block of North Jackson Street.
The area is busy late at night, with bars and restaurants that draw crowds, including many college students. When police arrived, they found multiple people shot. The scene was chaotic. Medics moved quickly to help the wounded while officers secured the area and tried to make sense of what had just happened.
One man was already gone. He was identified as 22-year-old Clayton Adams, a resident of Hull who worked at a bar downtown. People who knew him described him as a familiar face in the community, someone who showed up and did his job and was known by the regulars. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other victims were rushed to area hospitals. Both were in critical condition. One of them, 19-year-old Dylan Bentley, later died from his injuries, according to his family. The third victim, 20-year-old Landon Skinner, was shot in the eye and taken to a hospital in Atlanta. He remains in critical condition. His family is waiting and hoping.
Detectives worked through the morning piecing together what happened. Witness statements and evidence from the parking lot led them to a suspect: 22-year-old Mark Anthony Desousa of Jefferson. He was arrested and charged with malice murder, aggravated assault, and aggravated battery. After Bentley died, additional charges were added. Desousa is being held without bond.
Police have not said what led to the shooting. They believe it started as a confrontation in the parking lot, but the motive remains unclear. Investigators are reviewing surveillance video from nearby businesses and talking to anyone who was there that night. They are asking for anyone with information to come forward.
The Athens community is grieving. This is not the first act of violence downtown in recent months, and the deaths of two young men have left many shaken. Adams and Bentley were somebody’s son, somebody’s friend, somebody’s coworker. They were out on a night that turned into something no one could have predicted.
Skinner’s family is holding onto hope. They are by his side in Atlanta, waiting for news, praying for recovery. The road ahead is uncertain, and the bullet that hit him in the eye has left doctors fighting to save not just his life but his quality of life.
For now, the investigation continues. Police are gathering facts, reviewing footage, and building a case. The suspect is in jail. But for the families involved, none of that brings back what was lost. Two young men are gone. A third is fighting to stay here.
